Last year we had to change our insurance for the HOA. Part of the process was a short interview about the buildings and people so the insurance company knew what they were getting into with our policy. The interview was with our Treasurer Melissa and it went well. There was one recommendation that is worth passing along.
They thought it would be a good idea for everyone to have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket on every floor that you use as living space. If you have one than it is a good idea to check to see if the fire extinguisher needs to be recharged. They don’t last forever and do need to be recharged or replaced at some point. They do stay charged for quite a while so it is easy to forget about them. Let’s hope none of us will ever have a need for one but they are essential when you do need them. Do yourself and the rest of us a favor and check your fire extinguisher.
I am attaching a link to a video done for a segment on Good Morning America on how to use a fire extinguisher. They are not as easy to use as you would think and there definitely is a correct way to use them. The video shows how to use one on a stove. This is probably one of the most probable places for a fire so it is definitely worth watching. It also shows what a mess they make when you do have to use it. Better to have the mess than burn down your house but a fire blanket may be a better alternative for a stove fire.
Fire blankets smother a fire instead of extinguishing it with chemicals. They are also easy to use and appear to work well. A better alternative to extinguishing a grease fire on the top of your stove instead of spraying all around it with a fire extinguisher. I’ll attach a link for a fire blanket demonstration as well. Be careful about looking for them online. Some company’s put you on an email list where you will receive email every day if you accidently look for more information on their site. I doubt anyone needs any more junk email than they receive now.
